Where it begins…

All of my work is rooted in the landscape and many of the pieces in the upcoming ‘Peripheral Terrains’ series came from time spent on an artists residency 2 peninsulas away from my home on the Beara Peninsula. It’s amazing how each peninsula here has it’s own very distinctive characteristics and ambiance. The Beara has always been one of my favourite places to be - there is something so epically wild and magical about the landscape there.

I wasn’t quite sure what I was going to do with my time there, but when I arrived I just wanted to walk, swim and be in the landscape as much as possible. It was early September - one of my favourite times of the year - and the weather was (mostly) good to me. The landscape here in West Cork as we turn into Autumn is just stunning - the beautiful earthy reds and browns all start to come out and the natural quiet and stillness of the surroundings seems even more defined.

Like most of my work it all begins with a walk or a hike - this photo was taken of me by Jason X Lee during a hike from The Healy Pass to Hungry Hill on the Cork /Kerry border where many of the pieces in this collection began to form.
