Experiments
Any of the artwork that I frame I can’t use the perspex cover over the wax as it may melt it (it’s probably unlikely - especially in Ireland - but I still don’t think it’s a good idea).
So I’m left with all these perspex frame covers and didn’t know what to with them and I don’t like seeing them just sitting in corner gathering dust. I came across an online tutorial using encaustic with perspex and these are very quick experiments to see how they work together.
I laid down a thin layer of encaustic gesso on the perspex and, because I’m impatient in the studio sometimes, I used the heat gun to speed up the drying process.
Next I added a layer of encaustic medium and fused it with the heat gun
Then it’s time to start adding colour and texture with pigment sticks and oils and maybe start scraping away to draw into the surface.
This is definitely something I’m going to explore more - it’s a fun way to work, especially when I’m not particularly concerned with the outcome.
